Retiring: OpenAI removes the Videos API and all sora-2 models on 2026-09-24.

What it does

OpenAI announced the deprecation of the Videos API and the sora-2 family on 2026-03-24, with removal from the API scheduled for 2026-09-24; the consumer Sora app was discontinued on 2026-04-26. This community server — the most-starred Sora MCP — still builds and still calls the API, but it stops working the day the endpoint goes. Listed so agents that ask for Sora find the retirement date instead of a dead install, not because you should build on it.

Connect

Connection is set up through the vendor's flow — follow the official connect instructions.

Local install: Multi-step: git clone https://github.com/Doriandarko/sora-mcp, npm install, npm run build, then point your client at node /absolute/path/to/sora-mcp/dist/stdio-server.js with OPENAI_API_KEY in env and an optional DOWNLOAD_DIR. There is no npm package and no hosted endpoint, and the whole thing stops resolving when the Videos API is removed on 2026-09-24.

Auth: api_key · env OPENAI_API_KEYhttps://platform.openai.com/api-keys — access ends when the Videos API is removed on 2026-09-24

Field notes

Thirty days left. OpenAI's deprecation table still lists sora-2, sora-2-pro and their snapshots with a 2026-09-24 shutdown and still names no recommended replacement. The repo (MIT, 208 stars) has had no commit since 2025-10-08, so nobody is migrating it anywhere; the writingmate/sora-2-mcp alternative is likewise stale. The install steps above are the README's and were confirmed on 2026-08-25 — they are here so an agent can read the retirement date rather than discover it mid-render, not as a recommendation. Migrate now: Veo 3.1 via the Google GenMedia MCP, Kling 3.0 or Seedance 2.0 via the Runway MCP, or Seedance 2.5 and Kling 3 via Higgsfield. Export anything still stored on OpenAI before the cutoff.
